Picking the Right AP Economics Tutor

Finding a reliable tutor whose teaching style is a good match for your child is not simple. There is usually quite a bit of trial and error involved, and you likely have to go through a few tutors until you find the perfect match.

Here are some key points you should keep in mind when going through this process:

  • Honesty and Transparency: Is the tutor keeping you in the loop regarding your child's performance? Learning economics is a marathon, and every student, no matter how bright they are, has areas of improvement that experienced tutors should be able to detect.
  • Measurable Improvement in Performance: Tutors are not magicians, and can't make every student get a 5 in AP Micro and AP Macro. However, as long both the tutor and the student are putting in substantial effort, you should see measurable improvement in test scores. For private students, the tutor should be able to provide mock exams at the end of each AP Economics unit.
  • Are you hiring an Economics Teacher or an Economics Tutor? An effective economics teacher is not necessarily an effective economics tutor. Tutoring involves a continuous conversation with the student, shaping their thought process at an individual level. Teaching a class requires a very different skillset (public speaking, classroom management etc.). If the person you hired is doing nearly all the talking during the sessions, you have hired an economics teacher, not a tutor.

How Will I Prepare Your Child for the AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics Exams?

Economics is a subject where two economists won the Nobel Prize in the same year for opposite perspectives (1974!).

The fundamental mantra for economists is to question everything, and I follow that spirit in all my lessons. During our lessons, I continuously ask questions of my students, and they ask me everything they are confused about. I also empower them to challenge all my statements. This back and forth conversation and argument is the foundation of learning a logic based subject like economics.

Aside from a limited number of AP Classroom questions, AP® Micro and Macro students have a hard time finding topic specific MCQs and FRQs. Questions from official past papers require knowledge of the entire syllabus, which is not helpful when learning the syllabus gradually and trying to find practice problems specific to a single topic.

Aside from picking out the right MCQs and FRQs for my students to practice, I also develop my own topic based questions. For example, Tpock's AP Microeconomics Free Course has 180 MCQs that I have developed. Check it out in the homepage of this website!

Economics is a subject that can only be learned through repeated practice, and nothing is better to achieve that than attempting official AP® past papers with its MCQs and FRQs. My goal is ensuring that my students understand how to solve at least 10 years of past papers before heading into the exam hall.

Not many students understand that without drawing rough sketches of graphs, it is nearly impossible to answer a decent portion of MCQs correctly and quickly in the AP Economics exams. I try to build among my students the habit of drawing graphs both as a memory tool and also as a way of helping them understand the models at a deeper level.

Here is What My Past Clients Have to Say!

James Wang

Father of Euvan Wang, 2022-2023 batch, 5s in both AP Micro and Macro

"I am writing this testimonial to express my deep appreciation for Mr. Nuheen Khan, who has been an exceptional educator and mentor to my son on both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics.

From the first day of class, my son was impressed with his knowledge and passion for the subject. He is a dedicated and organized teacher who always comes well-prepared for each lesson that makes it easy for my son to follow along and understand complex economic concepts.

One of the things that my son appreciates most about Nuheen is the detailed feedback that he provides after each lesson: identifying areas where my son needs review and improvement, and constructive suggestions for the next lessons, and all these feedbacks are also transparent and accessible to me as parent.

As the class approached the final AP exams, Nuheen provided my son with comprehensive study guides, mock tests, and review sessions that prepared my son well for the exam, which gave him the confidence to perform well on the exams."

Student, 2021-2022 batch, 5s in both AP Micro and Macro

"Nuheen’s patience, knowledge, and passion for economics are all very evident in his teaching. He always comes to class well-prepared, and his ability to explain complex topics so well has made learning with him such an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

I started learning AP Macro and Micro with Nuheen really late into the year, and in just around 2-3 months he was able to teach me and prepare me for both the exams very well, despite the time restraints.

Nuheen is genuinely one of the kindest and greatest teachers that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, and his skill and passion for teaching made learning economics so easy and fun."

Maddy Yu

Student, 2021-2022 batch, 5s in both AP Micro and Macro

"Nuheen was my economics tutor during my first ever year of taking APs. Despite being unfamiliar with how AP Macro and Micro worked at first, his teaching style and dedication to his students truly allowed me to succeed and breeze through my economics class and the final exam.

Nuheen’s detailed slides for each unit were an absolute game-changer, breaking down complex economic concepts and graphs into easily understandable segments.

In preparation for the final exam, Nuheen provided numerous past papers and reviews for practice, which allowed me to gain confidence in the AP Macro and Micro test formats.

Beyond his teaching resources, Nuheen also fostered an open learning environment where I always felt comfortable asking questions and seeking clarification on certain topics I struggled with. I am truly grateful for Nuheen and his support along my AP journey."
